Thomas Riede - countertenor

Thomas Riede was born in Gotha in 1976. From 1990 to 1994 he gained singing experience in the famous Rundfunk-Jugendchor Wernigerode under Friedrich Krell.

After completing his schooling - he studied music in Weimar. In October 1997 he started studying singing at the University of Music & Theatre, Leipzig. At the beginning, Thomas Riede, still a baritone, was taught by Jörn Dopfer. At the same time, however, he tried singing as a countertenor and shortly thereafter definitively changed his register. This decision soon paid off as six months later he won a scholarship of the German Council of Music (Deutscher Musikrat) together with the vocal sextet Die Weimarer Hofsänger. From the end of 1998 until the final exams in 2003, he studied under Jitka Kovariková.

From the beginning of his studies, Thomas Riede has performed as a soloist as well as a member of different ensembles. He regularly works with famous conductors such as Philippe Herreweghe, Frieder Bernius, Hermann Max, Ludger Rémy, Wolfgang Katschner and Fabio Biondi. As a singer in the Collegium Vocale Gent and the Kammerchor Stuttgart he sings with famous Baroque interpreters with worldwide reputations. As a member of the Wittenberger Hofkapelle he has focused on Renaissance music since 2004.

His travels abroad have taken him thus far to Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Croatia and Hungary. In master classes with Andreas Scholl, Axel Koehler and Rebecca Stewart he has perfected his vocal abilities and interpretive skills in the field of Baroque and Renaissance music.

He also has comic talent and regularly entertains audiences together with the vocal quintet Die Spinnesänger from Blankenburg/ Harz.
